ausgestellt - exhibited
who makes art art, and what do those people think who make art?

An art project by Sophie Kaiser and Petra Stockdreher with Maximilian Joseph (sound works) and Markus Heltschl (film), on show March 2002 in Munich, Germany.

"ausgestellt" - autonomous and interdisciplinary
autonomous, because it has been created autonomously without financial backing
interdisciplinary, because it incorporates photography, sociology, film and music.

"ausgestellt" examines the circumstances surrounding the production of contemporary art, who is involved in its manufacture, and how those involved feel about their own function and position - and that of the others - in the art world. The central questions raised by the project are indebted to the sociological thought of Pierre Bourdieu.

"ausgestellt" gives concrete form to theoretical abstraction using the means and freedom possible with art. Between October 1999 and February 2001, 19 artists and 17 art mediators from Munich were photographed and interviewed on the art business: how do they view themselves in the field? How do they view the others? How does the art scene present itself? What produces success? How do people cope with competition? etc.
"ausgestellt" shows these photographs all together in one space as almost life-size digital prints. Posture, opening up and stepping back, colour, gestures, and clothes - create open and imaginary relationships between museum directors, artists, curators, galerists, and politicians in the cultural arena. A montage was made from the interviews in the form of a fictitious discussion between all of the participants.

"ausgestellt" experiments with sounds and visuals. An audio collage of original passages from the interviews will be mixed with sounds and noises from the art business, and given rhythmic form and a mutual musical structure.
A film consisting solely of writing, and collaged footage taken at the opening of "ausgestellt", augment one another in the form of a double projection, and once again pick up on the topic of the exhibition as shown in an exhibition.
